The Leaves Are Changing

The leaves are changing,
as the air turns crisper,
The sun is warm,
but cool breezes whisper,
Such a beautiful sight,
the reds and the gold,
The trees holding stories
that will never be told.
Their long branches
will again be put to the test,
Still strong and straight
for the next bird nest.
The snow and the ice
will take its toll
And the squirrels snuggle
into the cozy knothole.
The mountains sparkle
with the morning’s dew,
The stream trickles gently,
and the sky’s, a bright blue.
The birds soaring high
above the tall trees
Knowing their homes will lose
those sheltering leaves.
But they will out-run
the winter’s cruel ways
And they’ll go south
for much warmer days.
The tree will stay strong
to welcome them once more
And protect them from whatever
comes through life’s door.
