Characteristics and Temperament of a Collie

The temperament of The Rough and the Smooth Collie is basically the
same, in that they are both loving and loyal. The Smooth Collie is more
agile, possibly more inquisitive, and sometimes noisier. However,
it is always difficult to assess how strong an influence the
home environment is on the individual Collie's temperament.

The Collie, is a lithe, strong, responsive, active dog.
The deep, moderately wide chest shows strength, the
sloping shoulders and well-bent hocks indicate speed and
grace and the face shows high intelligence.
The Collie presents an impressive, proud picture of true
balance, each part being in harmonious proportion to every
other part and to the whole.

Collie, Rough and Smooth:

The "Lassie" stories popularized this large,
strong, active shepherd; it has a distinctive, full, lush coat with a
white-manned collar.

The Rough and the Smooth Collie started life as working sheepdogs,
but it was not long before the glamorous Rough Collie took the show
scene by storm. Queen Victoria, a great dog-lover, owned Rough Collies,
and soon American breeders were paying astronomical prices for
English-bred dogs. All it needed was the Lassie films to cement the
Rough Collie as the number one favorite companion and show dog.

The Smooth Collie, for so long considered the poor relation
of the Rough, has had a less spectacular history, but its outstanding
temperament and refined, elegant, good looks has
attracted many enthusiasts.

TEMPERAMENT:
Good-natured, friendly, dogs, the Collie is highly intelligent,
sensitive and sweet and easy to train and very loyal. The Collie is
usually good with other pets and friendly with other dogs. Very devoted to
and protective of his loved ones. They make excellent children's companion,
playful and gentle. They can be willful and must be trained gently or they will
refuse to cooperate. Some exhibit herding behavior as puppies, nipping at
people's heels though they generally outgrow this behavior. Collie puppies
housetrain quickly, generally in about a week (after about 10-12 weeks old).

LIVING CONDITIONS:
The Collie will do okay in an apartment as long as they get plenty of exercise.
They are relatively inactive indoors and do best with at least an average-sized yard.
Remember to provide plenty of shade and fresh water in warm weather.

GROOMING:
A thorough weekly brushing will keep the coat in good condition. Take extra care
when the undercoat is being shed. The Smooth variety has a one-inch coat that needs
very little grooming. Clip out any mats and bathe or dry shampoo as necessary.

LIFE EXPECTANCY:
About 14-16 years
